About Microsuction Ear
Wax Removal
What is microsuction ear wax removal?
Microsuction is a safe, comfortable method of
ear wax removal at home. Using magnified loupes and a
fine sterile suction tube, excess wax is gently removed from your ear
canal. This technique is considered an effective alternative to
traditional syringing or irrigation methods. Unlike water-based
methods, microsuction uses gentle suction to remove wax while
visualising the ear canal throughout the procedure.
Is microsuction better than syringing?
Yes, microsuction is widely regarded as a
preferred option compared to ear syringing or
irrigation. Syringing uses water to flush out wax, which carries risks
of infection, eardrum damage, and incomplete removal. Microsuction
uses gentle suction under direct visualisation, allowing the
practitioner to see exactly what they are doing throughout the
procedure. This can make it more precise and comfortable —
particularly important for anyone with a history of ear problems.
Is microsuction safe?
Yes, microsuction is a widely used method of
ear wax removal. The practitioner uses sterile,
single-use equipment and visualises the ear canal throughout the
entire procedure using magnified loupes. This direct visualisation
supports careful, precise work while helping to protect the eardrum.
Unlike syringing, there's no water involved, which removes the risk of
infection from water entering the ear.
Is microsuction noisy or uncomfortable?
The suction device does make a gentle whirring sound — similar to a
vacuum cleaner at low volume. Some patients may feel a light sensation
or slight tickle as the wax is removed, but it's generally very
comfortable. Things are taken slowly and you will always be checked
with to ensure you are happy to continue. Most patients are surprised
at how gentle and pain-free the procedure is. If you are anxious about
the procedure, please let the practitioner know — they will talk you
through every step.
What if I have had ear surgery before?
If you have had ear surgery, please let the practitioner know when
booking. In some cases, microsuction can still be performed, but it
requires extra care and consideration. Your medical history will be
reviewed before the appointment and you will be advised whether
treatment is appropriate. If microsuction is not considered suitable
for your situation, you may be advised to see your GP or ENT
specialist first. Your safety always comes first.
When should I see my GP instead?
You should see your GP first if you have: an active ear infection
(pain, discharge, or inflammation); a perforated eardrum or recent ear
surgery; sudden hearing loss not caused by wax; ear pain that hasn't
been diagnosed; or any concerns about your ear health that need
medical investigation. Once your GP has assessed and treated the
underlying condition, I can then help with ear wax removal.
Preparing for Your
Appointment
Do I need to use olive oil drops before my appointment?
Using olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops for 3-5
days before your appointment can help soften the wax, making it easier
and more comfortable to remove. Apply 2-3 drops in each ear twice
daily, lying on your side for a few minutes afterwards to let the
drops absorb. However, if you have very soft wax or no significant wax
build-up, drops may not be necessary. I'll assess your ears when I
arrive and advise accordingly.
What happens if there is no ear wax?
That's perfectly fine! Not everyone has significant wax build-up. If
your ears are clear, I'll perform a quick health check to confirm
everything looks healthy, and there's nothing more to do. You only pay
for the treatment — not for a consultation alone. If you were
experiencing hearing difficulties, I can help identify other potential
causes and advise on next steps.
What should I do after treatment?
After microsuction ear wax removal, your ears should feel clear and
comfortable immediately. I recommend: avoiding inserting anything into
your ears (cotton buds, ear plugs) for 24 hours; you may experience
mild sensitivity — this is normal and should settle quickly; if your
ears feel slightly dry, a single drop of olive oil once a week can
help maintain ear health; and your hearing improvement may feel even
better the next day as any residual wax settles. If you experience any
pain, unusual discharge, or persistent discomfort after treatment,
please contact me or see your GP.
Treatment Details
How long does the appointment take?
A typical
home visit ear wax removal appointment takes around
30-45 minutes. I take time to discuss your symptoms, examine both ears
thoroughly, and carry out the microsuction treatment gently and
carefully. There's no rush — your comfort and safety are my priorities
throughout. If both ears need treatment, I'll work on each one
methodically.
Can you treat one ear or both ears?
Yes, I can treat one ear or both ears during your appointment. If only
one ear needs treatment, I'll still examine both to make sure
everything looks healthy. My standard pricing of
£50 for both ears covers examination and treatment of
both ears — whether both need work or just one. If only one ear
requires treatment, the appointment is still straightforward and
efficient.
What happens if I have an ear infection?
If you have an active ear infection, I won't be able to treat you on
the day. I will advise you to see your GP first for appropriate
treatment. Once the infection has cleared — usually within 1-2 weeks —
we can then proceed with microsuction ear wax removal. Please inform
me of any ear problems when booking so we can assess the best
approach.

How much does ear wax removal cost?
My home visit microsuction ear wax removal service costs

are available at no extra cost. This

Health Concerns
Can ear wax cause tinnitus or dizziness?
Yes, significant ear wax build-up can sometimes contribute to
tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears) and can
affect your balance, leading to feelings of dizziness or unsteadiness.
This is because wax can press on the eardrum or affect the ear's
natural mechanisms for balance and hearing. Removing the wax often
helps reduce these symptoms. However, if you experience sudden or
persistent tinnitus, dizziness, or hearing loss, you should see your
GP to rule out other causes. If you're experiencing any of these
symptoms, I can examine your ears and discuss whether ear wax removal
might help.
