A few simple steps before your home visit can help your appointment run more smoothly. Here's what to expect — and how to prepare safely.
Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural, protective substance. Sometimes it builds up and becomes hard or impacted — and that can make removal more difficult.
When wax is hard and dry, it can sit tightly against the ear canal wall. Using an ear-wax softening product beforehand can gently soften the wax, which sometimes makes it easier to remove safely and more comfortably during your appointment.
It doesn't guarantee that all the wax will come away on the day, and it isn't essential in every case — but for many patients it can help the visit go more smoothly.
Every ear is different. Some wax softens quickly, some takes longer, and some doesn't need softening at all. Your practitioner will assess this during your appointment.
Softer wax can be easier and more comfortable to remove.
Prepared wax can help your appointment run more efficiently.
Your practitioner will advise what's right for your ears.
If softening is recommended, the most common options are simple and widely available. Always follow the product's own instructions.
Plain olive oil ear drops are a gentle, widely used option for softening wax. They're simple, inexpensive and available from most pharmacies without a prescription.
Some patients prefer a dedicated softening product such as{" "} Earol, which delivers olive oil as a fine spray. Either approach can be appropriate — the important thing is to use it as directed.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the packet or bottle — including how much to use and how often. Do not exceed what the product advises, and if a pharmacist or GP has given you specific guidance, follow that instead. If you're unsure whether softening is suitable for you, please contact us or speak to your pharmacist before starting.
Do not use cotton buds, fingers, keys, hairpins or any other object to remove or dislodge wax. This can push wax further in, irritate the ear canal and risk damaging the eardrum. After using drops, simply let any excess drain naturally or wipe the outer ear gently.
Please seek advice first — from us, your GP or a pharmacist — before putting anything into your ear if any of the following apply to you:
A hole or tear in the eardrum needs medical advice before drops are used.
Some procedures (e.g. grommets, repaired eardrum) require specialist assessment.
Any fluid, pus or bleeding from the ear should be assessed first.
Ongoing or severe ear pain should be looked at before treatment.
These can have other causes and should be checked urgently.
Ear infections, skin conditions or a weakened immune system — check first.
If you're unsure whether a softening product is safe for you, don't use it until you've had advice. We're always happy to answer questions before your appointment.
Your appointment takes place in the comfort of your own home. Here's how a typical visit unfolds.
We arrive at your agreed time, introduce ourselves and set up our portable, professional equipment. There's no need for you to prepare anything special on the day.
We'll ask about your symptoms and ear history — including any pain, discharge, previous surgery, hearing aids or past problems — so we can treat you safely.
Using a magnified view of the ear canal, we examine both ears to see what's going on, confirm the cause and check that treatment is suitable before we begin.
A home visit appointment typically lasts around{" "} 30–45 minutes. This allows time for the consultation, examination, treatment and aftercare advice — so there's never any rush, and you have the chance to ask questions.
Occasionally, wax is too hard, dry or impacted to remove safely and comfortably in a single appointment. This is nothing to worry about, and we would rather stop than risk discomfort or harm.
If this happens, your practitioner will explain what they found and recommend a further period of softening with olive oil or a suitable ear-wax softening product. Once the wax has had time to soften, a shorter return visit is usually all that's needed to complete the removal.
If further softening is required, we offer a reduced{" "} £25 return appointment to complete the removal once the wax has softened. We'll only ever recommend this if it's genuinely the right next step for your ears.
Our priority is always safe, comfortable removal — not speed.
Most people feel an immediate difference. Here's what's normal — and when to get in touch.
Many patients notice sounds are clearer and louder straight away once the wax is removed.
The ear canal can feel a little tender or sensitive for a short time. This usually settles within a day or so.
Continue to avoid cotton buds or any objects in the ear, and keep the ear dry until it feels settled.
If you have any concerns after your appointment, get in touch. We'll always advise if further assessment is needed.
If you develop significant pain, new discharge, bleeding or sudden hearing changes after your appointment, please contact us — or seek urgent medical advice from your GP or NHS 111 where appropriate.
